NOUN CLAUSES

Exercise 1: (Book Page No- 172)

Replace the word in italics with suitable noun clauses:

1. I know about his honesty

Answer: I know that he will be honest.

2. I heard of your success

Answer: I heard that you had succeeded.

3. He confessed the truth

Answer: He confessed that he was telling the truth.

4. The College President acquainted the freshers with mode of opening

a bank account for scholarships.

Answer: The college president told the “freshers” how to open a bank account for scholarships.

5. His departure was expected.           

Answer: It was expected that he would depart.

 

ADJECTIVE CLAUSES

Exercise 2: (Book Page No- 173)

Pick out the Adjective Clauses:

Answer:

1. The dog that barks seldom bites.

2. The saree that you chose pleased me.

3. Akshay has a car that glides smoothly.

4. God helps those who help themselves.

5. People who live in glass houses should not throw stones.

 

Exercise 3: (Book Page No- 174)

Replace the Adjective Clauses by Adjectives or Adjective Phrases:

1. Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.

Answer: Uneasy lies the head with the crown.

2. Which is the path that leads to the market?

Answer: Which is the path leading to the market?

3. The day when we will receive our degrees is drawing near.

Answer: The day of receipt our degrees is drawing near.

4. The reason why Smitha failed is obvious.

Answer: The reason for Smitha’s failure is obvious.

5. The girl who sits near me is my best friend.

Answer: The girl sitting near me is my best friend.

 

ADVERB CLAUSES

Exercise 4: (Book Page No- 176)

Underline the adverb clauses in the following sentences:

Answer:

1. We must get some vinegar so that we can prepare pickle.

2. Place your bag where you can locate it.

3. As soon as this work is finished, I will go to sleep.

4. When we were young, we used to cycle all over town

5. She talks as though everything can change overnight.

 

Exercise 5: (Book Page No- 177)

Replace the adverb phrase with an adverb clause:

1. The soldiers fought bravely

Answer: The soldiers who fought were brave.

2. The price is too high for a second-hand vehicle.

Answer: Even though it is a second hand vehicle, the price is too high.

3. Snow is lighter than ice.

Answer: Snow is lighter when we compare it with ice.

4. A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

Answer: Even if we call it by any name, a rose would smell sweet.

5. They lifted the heavy box with all their might.

Answer: They lifted the box which was heavy with all their might.

 

Exercise 6: (Book Page No- 177) 

Replace the Adverb Clause with an Adverb or Adverb Phrase:

1.     The heat was so scorching that people walking barefoot suffered.

Answer: People walking barefoot suffered because the heat was scorching.

2. When the just rule, the people are happy.

Answer: People are happy in the just rule.

3. This story is too complicated for me to remember the details

Answer: I cannot remember the details because of the complication.

4. When she sees a lizard, she shrieks.

Answer: On seeing a lizard, she shrieks.

5. He was kind to me because I was kind to his mother.

Answer: My kindness to her mother made her feel kind to me.
